Over the past few years, the Sky Mavis validator has been processing free transactions for all new Ronin Wallet users, collectible axie holders, and Axie Land NFT holders. On October 9th, we will discontinue this feature. Non-sponsored transactions will now incur a small gas fee in RON, which amounts to 0.01 RON or so.

Web3 onboarding has long been fraught with challenges – from wallet setup to acquiring that first handful of tokens. Ronin Waypoint fixes this.
On October 9th, Ronin Waypoint’s new Sponsored Transaction feature will enable one party to pay for another’s gas. Why is this useful? Think about the first time you funded a fresh wallet. It may have been awkward to pay gas fees with an empty wallet, or to gauge how much gas you needed to pay in the first place. That’s why, once Sponsored Transactions are LIVE, it’s natural to picture Game Studios leveraging Ronin Waypoint to pay for their new user’s gas fees. Smoother onboarding is a win-win. Here’s how it works:
What are Sponsored Transactions?
Sponsored Transactions are transactions that involve two signatures: the first belongs to the user, the second belongs to the sponsor. From the user’s POV, this looks like a gas-free transaction. Submit Transaction → Confirm Transaction → Done. This makes new user onboarding easier.
On the back end, game studios are subsidizing their community members’ transactions through Ronin Waypoint. Here’s how:
Step 1: User initiates a transaction with Ronin Waypoint.
Step 2: Ronin Waypoint sends a transaction validation request to the sponsoring service.
Step 3: Sponsoring service verifies the user's eligibility for a sponsored transaction and returns the user's quota to Ronin Waypoint.
Step 4: If eligible, the fee is nullified in the UI. The user signs the transaction and sends it to the sponsoring service.
Step 5: Sponsoring service requests the payer to sign the transaction with payer’s signature.
Step 6: Payer signs the transaction, indicating its agreement to sponsor the gas fees.
Step 7: The transaction, signed by both the user and the payer, is submitted to the Ronin network.
Free Gas Service Sunset
Over the past few years, Sky Mavis has been processing free transactions for all new Wallet users, collectible axie holders, and Axie Land NFT holders. This helped us bootstrap the user base and acquire our first 2M DAU. However, its original mission has been accomplished. Ronin Waypoint’s new technology is more extensible to other parties who want to sponsor users’ gas and requires less maintenance going forward.
That’s why we will discontinue the free transaction feature on October 9th. This minor update means users will now pay gas for every non-sponsored transaction. For example, the swap pictured above requires a 0.01 RON gas fee – which is about $0.02 USD. Think of it like this: Sponsored Transactions will replace Free Transactions. Here’s what we’re doing to make this transition easier:
All New Waypoint Users Receive 5 Sponsored Transactions
Starting on October 9th, all new Ronin Waypoint users will receive 5 sponsored transactions – sponsored by Sky Mavis. Remember: sponsored means free for users! Use these free transactions for any purpose including swapping, staking, sending tokens and more.
Here’s how to set up a Ronin Waypoint account with any existing Ronin Wallet:
Step 1: Go to https://www.roninchain.com/waypoint
Step 2: Select “Create Account”
Step 3: Click “Sign-Up”
Step 4: Click “Set up now” to complete account creation process
Final Thoughts
The Ronin empire has entered a new era. Our movement is millions strong, and we grow stronger everyday. Ronin Waypoint has the power to onboard new users faster than ever, and Sponsored Transactions are part of that vision. Let’s keep scaling.
